This is a band everyone with a love for vehement death metal should be aware of, a band well on the road to greatness and one you’ll be hearing a lot more from in the future. Formed in 2012 the four piece features veterans from Ireland’s metal underground with Abaddon Incarnate, Altar of Plagues and Mourning Beloveth being just a few of the bands some of their members have played in. Malthusian has created a massive stir from their inception onwards, a stir that has since became a maelstrom as their importance and profile continue to ascend at an alarming rate. The beauty of this rise to prominence is so far they’ve only released one four track demo (MMXIII) which came out in November 2013. MMXIII almost instantly sold out from Invictus Productions, becoming an instant classic and many people’s demo of the year in the process. Their live debut had taken place earlier in 2013 with Gospel of the Horns, Bolzer, Zom and Dread Sovereign; and has since been followed by a string of other highly significant live dates. These stunning live performances further fuelled their reputation and to date they’ve shared stages with, amongst others, Inquisition, Cruciamentum, Dead Congregation, Behemoth and Primordial along with a spot at last year’s Hell’s Pleasure Festival. They also have a number of prestigious live dates planned for 2015 – Wolf Throne Festival in France, thirteen European dates with Altar of Plagues, a support slot with Portal in Dublin and a European tour with Negative Plane are just a few of their planned gigs for the first half of 2015. A certain highlight on their touring calendar will be at Martyrdoom IV in St Vitus Bar, Brooklyn, New York where they will share a billing with the likes of Necrophobic, Lvcifyre, and Phobocosm on the 6th of November. Malthusian’s music has its root’s firmly planted in cavernous death metal but they combine it with doom, black metal and other elements to create an infectious, all-encompassing, claustrophobic type of hate-filled, venomous death. Below the Hengiform features three tracks – The Gasless Billows, Slouching Equinox and Forms Become Vapour. I have no problem whatsoever with the production on their demo but on this Malthusian have managed to achieve bigger and better production without losing any of the sinister atmosphere from their debut. The first two tracks are each over nine minutes long and are hate-fuelled, demented trips into the twisted psyche that is Malthusian. This is a release that requires very little description – it destroys from start to finish - it’s really as simple as that and you’d be a fool not to snap it up on its release. Malthusian has been including closing track, Forms Become Vapour, in their live sets recently with devastating effect and it’s an absolute belter that’s every bit as potent on the EP. They recently shared it on their Bandcamp page and the link’s listed below, for those of you who may not have had the pleasure of hearing it yet. I’d seriously question anyone who doesn’t like this EP. Malthusian are part of a small group of bands who lead the pack in terms of inventiveness and are right up there with the likes of Portal and Antediluvian; combine this with a determination and dedication to perform to the highest of their ability and you’ve got a lethal combination. I can’t recall a release that was anticipated more in recent years, sometimes expectations this high can put a band under extra pressure but I’m glad to say Malthusian is well up to the task and has brought us one of the year’s best and most important releases. Even though it’s only March this is an EP that will feature highly when it comes to traditional end of year lists – it’s highly likely that for me this will be unbeaten this year. In a recent interview with Zero Tolerance when questioned about an album AC stated “We will put our heads down and work for as long as it takes to come up with an album’s worth of material that is free of any wasted minutes or filler. There is enough shit music in the world and we really don’t want to add to it!” I’ll second that and can’t wait to hear an album’s worth of their material but this EP will suffice in the meantime, it’s an EP that will change things and sets a very high standard for other bands to try and match. Negative Plane, on this release, encapsulate absolutely everything I'd not only want in merely a black metal album, but simply a metal album. Adjectives like originality and uniqueness are absolutely applicable to this album, but there's something very uncannily special about this album. Something very difficult to describe, and perhaps somewhat personal. Perhaps a main point is that if there was a single guitar player's style I not only enjoy and admire, but artistically would love to call my own; it would be that of Nameless Void. Amazingly, this band is merely a duo; with the unmistakable talent of Nameless on guitar, bass and vocals - all chaotically rounded off with the equally inimitable drum work of Bestial Devotion. Interesting pseudonyms, to be sure, but that's nothing compared to these two guys' music.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cspan\u003eSo, what is it about this album? A lot, actually\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan class=\"bcTruncateMore\"\u003e. Firstly, there is an absolutely staggering amount of atmosphere and incredible songwriting here; and to these ears, something Negative Plane do nearly better than any other metal band, regardless of genre. Often writing lengthy compositions running near the eight or nine minute mark, Negative Plane mold a verdure of truly dark and seething malign character that oozes from within the magnificent guitar work at all times. These songs, compositionally, are quite complex and progressive by general metal standards (even if not especially difficult in technique.) Utilizing foreboding, dense, challenging linear songwriting that is expansive and scathing, Negative Plane's music is also extremely memorable, epic, and always somehow ringing with an abstract and unmatched sense of dark grandiosity. The stressing of certain notes, the mere note choice and unheard of fluctuation between consonance and dissonance, the placement of repetition - all these small elements are masterfully executed. The essential elements of black metal are certainly in place, but Negative Plane take the sinister moods and dark sounds of the genre and weave them into voids of riffs where an unmistakable combination of sophistication and primitive black metal character come together like nothing before. Furthermore, the guitar tone and overall production here is among the absolute best to ever be created. The overall sound is very large, with the guitar tone sounding very warm and perhaps slightly Hellenic (if I must compare it to any scene, historically) yet it's also very distant. There's a refreshing, wholesome analog quality to it that keeps a very dark mood there, and the reverb-soaked, utterly sinister guitar style establishes am uncanny, trademark atmosphere on this release that is so much more effective than anything else I've encountered. Bass is nearly completely audible for much of this album (yes, fucking finally!) and is done with a very plain, clean tone that's coherent and lends an equally dark wall of thumping simplicity behind the foul veil of the six string encasing. The feel is incredibly idiosyncratic - being bleak, warm, black, open, massive, frightening, and utterly amazing on every level. This is quite possibly the most atmospheric metal album I've come across.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eAnd the songwriting here is just damn near unrivaled. Talk about skilled composers; Nameless Void is obviously extremely skilled in a technical sense, but even more so with writing monumental compositions of enthralling \"atmospheric dysphoria\" as another reviewer so brilliantly put it. Packed into these lengthy songs is a jarring fluidity of mesmerizing and grand song craft, and something that truly showcases the magic of the guitar. It's a sound that swallows the listener, much like a black hole, but it's just musical enough to paint an entire world around this album as it sucks you in. The wide variety of picking, tapping, trills, staccatos, legatos, harmonics, and other tricks are arranged and composed to absolute near-perfection, and the relationship between playing styles and overall rhythms invokes a very dense and monolithic vortex of otherworldly essence. And deserving special mention are one of my absolute favorite parts about this band: Void's dysphoric and rather unnerving psychedelic leads, such as beginning at 5:21 in \"Staring into the Abyss\", 8:20 in \"A Church in Ruin\" or especially at 3:03 in \"Advent of the Beast\" when the guy gives new meaning to the possibilities of tapping. But nearly no note is wasted, and no riff is weaker than any other. Some may be overused here and there, as in \"Death Mass\", but with this kind of album, it's much easier to view them as 'useless extras' than significant detractors. But that's about it. And the album closes with \"Advent of the Beast\" - probably the single greatest black metal song ever. Unique, flawlessly composed and managing to be all at once more dark, atmospheric and triumphant than nearly any other band who mastered that kind of trinity (even Bathory - yeah, I'm serious.) And that solo at the end is the greatest climax in a song ever, in my opinion - one of the most transcendental and beautiful moments ever composed on anything. It's one of those songs you listen to again and again. It's prefect.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThen there's the drums, which I normally don't speak much about, but here, I must state how fantastic a drum performance is to be found here. Cohesively matching the very off-kilter musicality here, BD's drumming style is chaotic, relentless and unpredictable. Complex, intricate, and ringing with the utter chaos of fulfilling cymbal abuse, BD's drumming simply displays a great double mastery of intensity and intricacy that is often lost in metal drumming, as far as I'm concerned. The cymbal abuse, rigid rhythms, mere note choice and impish use of bell (and best of all: no triggers) is all incorporated into an unmistakable backbone here, and the drum production is equally perfect. The bass drums are flat and muffled, yet punchy; the snare is sharp, but beefy; the cymbals and hit-hats ring with dusty filth and juicy reverb clatter, the bells peek out here and there like sirens, and the toms thud with power. And it's all coalesced in a most striking and cerebral friction-laced assault. And to top it all off, the vocals are certainly the most fitting you could ever hope to hear. These vocals are soaked with reverb and echo, giving the album a delightfully ghastly character. The very delivery of the lyrics is quite unsettling, and ups the unsettling ante of this album tenfold.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eTo sum it up, this album is an absolute masterpiece. It makes something wholly unique and singular out of familiar elements of metal - both traditional and extreme, and is the accumulation of a variety of influences into a sound that is wholly unsurpassed to my musical palate. I had previously compared this to certain bands, but even at that, only slight seconds of songs remind you of something similar to other bands. Negative Plane are wholly original, and transcend the very character of what black metal has been into something far beyond, without ever making it feel unlike black metal should. Directly comparing them to any other band is an insult to their originality, though the band claims to be influenced by Ved Buens Ende and Mortuary Drape, and there are perhaps four or five riffs on this album that merely give off those bands' vibes. Beyond that, their macabre inclusion of organ playing and chanting\/ecclesiastical elements is a perfect tint to the atmosphere. All in all, there's not much left to yammer on about. This is sheer monumental genius, and should be remembered for decades to come, as one of the most impressive creations of new millennium metal music. Out of the blue, this album appeared and floored everyone. Why? The fact that something so ingenious and erratic was still possible in a genre in which many have dismissed as exhausted through and through of anything innovative and original. This is true to an extent, black metal is a genre which has been suffering majorly from a drought of inspiration of late, though occasionally a band comes along every once in a while to try out something new and against the grain. Sometimes it works, but more often than not it doesn't and said band fades away to languish in obscurity. This is always going to be the way because black metal fans more than most are always skeptical of changes, they can be a tough bunch to satisfy at the hardest of times. This is where Negative Plane come in. If you've ever listened to a band for the very first time, and after one listen to the album sat up and thought to yourself “Wow, this is unlike anything I've ever heard before, yet absolutely astounding; these guys are going to be big” then you've felt the same as to what I felt when I first heard Negative Plane. They retain enough of the traditional ethics and basis of traditional black metal and fuse it with a bizarre amalgamation of gothic horror and archaic styling that will unite even the most fickle of black metal fans.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003ePicture yourself in a vast cathedral, enshrouded in an ancient horrific mist, gradually dragging you down into a fear induced delirium, a swirling myriad of primeval voices strangle the remains of any rational thought you may have left like the rat in it's dying throes to the python. Extravagant, yes, but an album such as this deserves nothing less. I have heard various people liken it almost to a Lovecraftian horror soundtrack, and in a way there could not be a more apt definition for the sound of Stained Glass Revelations. It's ominous, foreboding and terrifying, yet at the same time it has this almost ridiculous macabre carnival-esque atmosphere. This is due in no small part to the contributions of Nameless Void, who provides both the guitar work and the vocals. The guitar is swathed in layers of reverb and with the slightly more prog route they have taken in regards to the guitars this time around they have veered off into a more definitive psychedelic route, something along the lines of “A Church in Ruin” off their debut. The sheer variation and multiform nature of the guitar work is astounding, no second riff is ever the same, one minute NV is playing something similar to Celtic Frost, the next it's a totally abstract guitar lead where every note reflecting off every corner of your mind. I mentioned Celtic Frost before, and they probably are one of Negative Plane's main influences. Certainly on the debut at least, maybe less so on this album which is so unique it's a challenge in itself to try and compare it to anything. At times the album doesn't even sound metal, as I stated before at points it morphs into something almost like dark, twisted circus music, and the vocals of NV are the voices of cast; twisted and unhinged and spitting corruption. “The One and the Many” is a great example of this, rising and falling around the vocals of Nameless Void. The bass and drum work definitely shouldn't be ignored either, the bass resonating beneath the chaos above it and one of the main components of the overall atmosphere, while the drumming is best described as extremely unpredictable and unconventional. Bestial Devotion is a big fan of his cymbals, chaotic and complex at the same time with no holding back on the quality.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe atmosphere pours out of this record in waves, it's an atmosphere not dissimilar to that of Drawing Down the Moon or De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas, one which is extremely dense, ambiguous and warped, an atmosphere that completely makes the album what it is. They also are one of the few bands who actually manage to use interludes to their full effect and not just for aimless filler, using them to build the suspense in between each song, and avoid using shitty samples and actually composing the interludes themselves. If I had to pick one song which would sum up the album thoroughly, it would be the enigmatic “Angels Veiled in Bone”. As dark and as depraved as the dungeons of Hades while throughout it all flicking a wry smile. Grandiose riffing and chromatic leads, psychopathic vocals and an atmosphere that puts almost every other band out there at the minute to shame.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWith Stained Glass Revelations, Negative Plane move up to the top rung of the ladder and it would be a horrendous injustice if they don't get more recognition on the back of an absolute gem such as this. The move in a more psychedelic direction was an utter masterstroke by them, but I still don't think it's their 'pièce de résistance' as such, because I honestly think they have even better in them. I guess only time will tell. A work of unassailable genius. Obscure, mysterious and at times downright petrifying, all the while wearing a masque of perverse humour.
